Earthquake e-mail: 'I was jolted awake'

(CNN) -- Soon after the earthquake was felt across the northeastern United States and Canada early Saturday, CNN was deluged with e-mail from people describing their experiences. Here's a sampling:

  • I was hearing confessions at St. Patrick's Basilica in Ottawa at 6:45 a.m. until 7 a.m. At 6:50 a.m.(around 8 seconds) I felt in the confessional room earthquake-like tremors. I could hear the Basilica church ceiling cracking (like hail or snow falling) ... and I could feel it on my feet .... that (the floor) was shaking. -- The Rev. Jesse Tapia, Ottawa, Canada
  • I was woken up this at 6:50 a.m. to what felt like a heavy train running by. The whole house trembled for about 15-20 seconds. I commented to my fiancee that the wind sure was blowing hard outside. But there were no other sounds. Nothing was disturbed except my sleep. Having lived in New England for 40 years, I can't remember anything else like it. -- Fred Ransom, Haverhill, Massachusetts
  • I was reading your story on the tremors felt in New Hampshire and New York, and wanted to report that I, too, was awakened by some fairly violent tremors at around 6:55 a.m. in Burlington, Vermont, where I am for the weekend. They lasted for about 20 seconds. At first I thought it may have been a plane crash or a powerful military jet taking off, but it lasted too long. -- John Connors, Medford, Massachusetts
  • We not only felt the quake but it woke us right up and lasted at least a minute or two. We felt the whole house shaking! We have never felt anything like this before. -- Shelley Marie Fuller, North Creek, New York
  • I live in Liverpool, New York. I am in a hospital bed following an injury. The hospital bed shook heavily, then stuff on the shelves across the room shook and moved. I know it was 6:56. I immediately checked the clock. -- Sarah G. Kimball
  • Nothing wakes me up before 7 a.m., and this morning something did. I can't explain what it felt like, but I was just jolted awake, and at the same time my parakeet, who was still asleep and covered, started flitting all over his cage. I couldn't figure out what could have scared him like that because he never does anything like that. -- Marcia Nasca, Buffalo, New York
  • I had just woken up and was waiting for my alarm to go off at 7 a.m. when I felt my whole bed shake for a few seconds. I was still half asleep and I guess I passed it off as just a really strong gust of wind or a dream or something. -- Luke Petre, Norwood, Massachusetts
  • At 6:55 a.m. my desk rocked back and forth for about 10 seconds. Then about 30 seconds later, it shook again for 20 to 30 seconds. I looked at the fish tank and the water was almost slopping over. The entire house shook and there was a slight noise. -- William Bowden, North Conway, New Hampshire
