Gutierrez: Scores quizzed over casino shootout

LAUGHLIN, Nevada (CNN) -- Authorities confined and questioned about 100 people inside a southern Nevada casino Saturday, trying to determined who and what sparked a fatal gunfight between rival motorcycle gangs. CNN Correspondent Thelma Gutierrez visited the town and casino, gathering information from witnesses and police and later discussing the incident with anchor Catherine Callaway.

GUTIERREZ: Just a few moments ago, police told us that a large number of people are under arrest. However, they would not release any details because, they say, this case is very sensitive and the investigation is ongoing.

We have video that was shot by an amateur videographer showing the aftermath of the shooting. In it, you see investigators trying to separate victims from suspects. One man actually began to fight with an officer.

So far, 100 people have been detained for questioning inside of Harrah's, the casino where the incident took place. We're told that Harrah's is in a state of lockdown, or at least it was just a few moments ago.

After questioning, some guests have been allowed to leave -- they've gone to other hotels.

This is a shootout that authorities say is the worst ever inside a Nevada casino.

It began at 2:15 early Saturday morning between two rival gangs -- the Mongols and the Hells Angels. Police say a member of the Mongols motorcycle gang pulled out a gun on a member of the Hells Angels. A gunbattle erupted that quickly spread from the bar in Harrah's to the casino floor.

Three men were killed at the scene and four were transported by air to Las Vegas hospitals. Eleven people were injured in the melee -- some stabbed, some shot. Several are listed in critical condition.

There are tens of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts here in Laughlin. They're here for the 20th annual River Run festival. Apparently, this is an event that is normally ... quite peaceful, with lots of families attending. Not this year.

But the motorcycle shows have continued, and people are going about their business -- trying to return to normal.

CALLAWAY: You alluded to this, if you could clarify: We are hearing reports that they are questioning hundreds in connection with this incident.

GUTIERREZ: That's the latest figure that we heard. When we arrived, we were told that there were at least 100 people being detained and being questioned inside of Harrah's.

But again police say, for clarification, that they're trying to separate the suspects from victims -- they're trying to sift through who's who in all of this.
