More Afghan detainees sent to GuantanamoWASHINGTON (CNN) -- More detainees captured and held in Afghanistan are on their way to U.S. detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Pentagon officials said Friday. It is unclear how many are in the latest group, which was expected to arrive at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay on Friday afternoon. This is the second group of detainees to be sent this week to the base, where the U.S. Southern Command recently opened larger, indoor detention facilities. The detainees will join more than 330 other detainees held at the base. They're suspected of being al Qaeda members or of fighting to support the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, which was ousted as part of the U.S. anti-terrorist push following the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. |
