GILROY, California (CNN) -- A moderate earthquake -- followed by five aftershocks -- shook the San Francisco Bay area Monday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center.

The 5.2 magnitude quake occurred at 10 p.m. (1 a.m. EDT) and was centered three miles south-southwest of Gilroy, which is about 80 miles southeast of San Francisco.

The earthquake rattled fans at two nationally-televised sporting events: A National Hockey League playoff match between Colorado and San Jose, and a National League baseball game between Atlanta and San Francisco, gaining mention on both broadcasts. Play was not interrupted in either contest.

Gilroy Mayor Tom Springer said the city escaped largely unscathed.

"No medical calls ... no gas, no water mains; no electrical disruptions of any type, just a little shaky," said Springer. "These things happen when you live in California. You get used to them."

There were reports of broken and cracked windows in the city's business district.

Springer said he was more upset about the Sharks losing their playoff game to Colorado than he was about the earthquake. San Jose lost to the Avalanche a 2-1 in overtime. (Full story)

The earthquake did set off the sprinkler system at the Gilroy Wal-Mart, flooding the building. The store was closed early to allow the water to drain.

Bill Smith at National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado, said the 5.2 quake falls in the moderate category.

"I wouldn't expect any serious damage in California," Smith said.
