Lady Bird Johnson getting better
AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) -- Lady Bird Johnson is showing improvements daily as she continues to recover from a light stroke suffered nearly two weeks ago, her family said Tuesday. The widow of former President Lyndon Johnson, she remained in fair condition at the Seton Medical Center in Austin. In a message on the hospital's Web site, the Johnson family said the 89-year-old former first lady's "speech and swallowing are improving daily. ... Both physicians and family members are encouraged." The message said no date has been set for her release from the medical center. She was hospitalized on May 2 after suffering a small stroke that left her unable to speak, and affected her ability to swallow. Her battle against the stroke has been worsened by a long-standing case of macular degeneration, which has caused her to lose her central vision. Unable to see well enough to read or write, "all she can do is nod yes or no and smile," her daughter Luci Baines Johnson said shortly after the hospitalization. |
