Amtrak train derails in South CarolinaRIDGELAND, South Carolina (CNN) -- An Amtrak passenger train hit a log truck at a crossing and derailed Tuesday morning north of Ridgeland, South Carolina, authorities said. About 15 people were injured. The injuries didn't appear to be life-threatening, and there were no fatalities, Jasper County emergency services Director Mike Hodges said. The Amtrak train was southbound when it hit the log truck, he said. Ten rail cars went off the tracks in the 9 a.m. accident. Hodges said 137 people were on the passenger manifest. The accident was expected to disrupt Amtrak service along the busy corridor. "This rail will probably be out of service for the rest of the day at a minimum," said Steven Malphrus, the county's deputy emergency services director. Amtrak officials could not be reached for comment. |
