More remains found near Ground ZeroBone fragments, teeth, parts of luggage racks
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Remains of about 12 victims were found in buildings in the vicinity of Ground Zero this week, only days after the ceremony marking the end of the recovery effort. With the work at the immediate World Trade Center site largely finished, fire department and construction crews were sifting through debris in adjacent buildings which were struck by plane parts and sections of the towers. City officials have always expected they would find more human remains in these nearby buildings, a spokesperson for the Mayor's office said.
Two office buildings -- the 23-story 90 West Street building at the southwest corner of the site and the neighboring 12-story 130 Cedar Street building -- were searched in the last week. Bone fragments, a jaw with the teeth still intact and parts of racks that used to hold the luggage from one of the hijacked planes have been found. Firefighters have had limited access to several other nearby buildings since the September 11 attacks. |
