4.4 quake reported near Yucca MountainBEATTY, Nevada (CNN) -- An earthquake occurred Friday not far from the site of the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. The quake was measured at 4.4 magnitude and rumbled through the region about 5:40 a.m. PDT, said Butch Kinerney, a spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred about 30 miles east-southeast of Beatty, which is about 25 miles west of Yucca Mountain. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The repository is to provide long-term storage for nuclear waste from around the country. It has been vigorously opposed by Nevadans, but was approved by the House. Action in the Senate is pending, with the outcome uncertain. |
