Major fires in the West
A guide to the fire season's destruction
(CNN) -- Twenty-nine large wildfires -- each 500 acres or more -- were burning Tuesday in eight states: Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Montana.
About 3.7 million acres have burned since the beginning of the year.
That's more than twice the number of acres than the average for the same period in the last ten years.

Washington
Deer Point fire
23,678 acres in Wenatchee National Forest
Started July 15, unattended campfire
Containment: 30 percent
Personnel: 985
Structures lost: 5 (no homes)
Cost to date: $4 million
Seventy-five homes in and around communities of Manson and Chelan are threatened with the potential for 300 more to be threatened.
Oregon
Fourteen fires, approaching 300,000 acres, are burning.
Toolbox Complex fire -- joined with Winter fire but still reported separately
95,012 acres, 63,012 in Fremont National Forest
Started July 15 by lightning
Containment: 40 percent

Monument fire
24,700 acres near Malheur National Forest
Started July 12, lightning
Containment: 30 percent

Cost to date: $2.2 million
Seventy-five residences are threatened. Federal firefighters will conduct field training for the U.S. Army troops on the fire lines. Troops will be trained in fire line construction, tool use and safety skills.

Rattle Complex fire
94,260 acres, 20 miles northeast of the Green River

Wyoming
Broad fire
9,000 acres in Yellowstone National Park
Started June 27 by lightning
Containment: 55 percent, full containment expected September 28
