Major fires in the West


(CNN) -- Twenty-nine large wildfires -- each 500 acres or more -- were burning Tuesday in eight states: Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah and Montana.

About 3.7 million acres have burned since the beginning of the year.

That's more than twice the number of acres than the average for the same period in the last ten years.

Some major wildfires in the Western states follow.

Washington

Deer Point fire

  • 23,678 acres in Wenatchee National Forest
  • Started July 15, unattended campfire
  • Containment: 30 percent
  • Personnel: 985
  • Structures lost: 5 (no homes)
  • Cost to date: $4 million
  • Seventy-five homes in and around communities of Manson and Chelan are threatened with the potential for 300 more to be threatened.
  • Oregon

    Fourteen fires, approaching 300,000 acres, are burning.

    Toolbox Complex fire -- joined with Winter fire but still reported separately

  • 95,012 acres, 63,012 in Fremont National Forest
  • Started July 15 by lightning
  • Containment: 40 percent
  • Personnel: 1,269
  • Cost to date: $3.2 million
  • Several ranches, a major power line threatened
  • Winter fire -- joined with Toolbox Saturday but still reported separately

  • 32,000 acres, near Paisley
  • Started July 12 by lightning
  • Containment: 40 percent
  • Personnel: 1,001
  • Cost to date: $3.4 million
  • 20 homes threatened.
  • Eyerly fire

  • 23,777 acres in Metolious River Canyon
  • Started date July 9 by lightning
  • Containment: 75 percent; full containment estimated Tuesday
  • Personnel: 1,029
  • Structures lost: 37 (18 homes)
  • Cost to date: $9 million
  • 280 residences threatened
  • Monument fire

  • 24,700 acres near Malheur National Forest
  • Started July 12, lightning
  • Containment: 30 percent
  • Personnel: 811
  • Cost to date: $2.2 million
  • Seventy-five residences are threatened. Federal firefighters will conduct field training for the U.S. Army troops on the fire lines. Troops will be trained in fire line construction, tool use and safety skills.
  • California

    Deer fire

  • 1,800 acres in Sequoia National Forest near Bakersfield
  • Started July 21, believed to have been set or caused by accident
  • Containment: 25 percent; full containment estimated Tuesday
  • Personnel: 427
  • 25 homes lost
  • 200 homes threatened
  • McNally
  • 15,000 acres in Sequoia National Forest near North Kernville
  • Started July 21
  • No containment
  • Personnel: 911
  • Giant Sequoia National Monument and 200 homes threatened
  • Colorado

    Big Elk fire

  • 4,100 acres in Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest
  • Started July 17, caused by human activity
  • Containment: 25 percent (full containment expected Saturday)
  • Personnel: 749
  • Cost to date: $1.9 million
  • Big Elk Meadows subdivision evacuated with 650 residences threatened; U.S. Highway 36 closed.
  • An airtanker crashed, killing two firefighters battling this fire.
  • Utah

    Rattle Complex fire

  • 94,260 acres, 20 miles northeast of the Green River
  • Started June 20 by lightning
  • Containment: 70 percent
  • Personnel: 448
  • Cost to date: $8.8 million
  • Wyoming

    Broad fire

  • 9,000 acres in Yellowstone National Park
  • Started June 27 by lightning
  • Containment: 55 percent, full containment expected September 28
  • Personnel: 363
  • Cost to date: $3 million
  • Helitankers, fire lines are holding fire on east side of Yellowstone River
