Pioneering change on TV

When the new CNN Headline News debuted Monday, August 6, 2001, then-network head Teya Ryan said CNN Headline News was changing everything but its name.

Teya was right.

The new Headline News launched from a state-of-the-art studio at CNN's world headquarters in Atlanta, delivering fast-paced news and in a distinctive format.

Designed for viewers with busy lives who want relevant and comprehensive news tailored to the urgency of their schedules, CNN Headline News' multi-element screen was innovative and a new look for television news.

Reaction was immediate. Television critics wrote about us, and viewers responded with e-mail, calls and letters. Though not always positive, the response told CNN Headline News that viewers were watching, and we listened to their feedback.

Today, we've exceeded our goals. In fact, the numbers alone show that CNN Headline News is excelling; the network is up in household ratings, total viewers and in the key adult demos, both in primetime and total day. Because we've succeeded, we're ready to raise the bar.

So, beginning Monday, August 5, you will notice a few refinements to the CNN Headline News screen. The video box will be 14 percent larger; the weather map is larger and features a different look; the ticker will be more animated; and the graphics will be more dynamic.

These changes are building on the remarkable foundation that Teya built. When I took over the network this past February, I knew that the network was setting standards throughout the news industry.

The refinements I'm making to our on-air product are just the next step in evolving CNN Headline News to its next level. The network will stay true to its mission of delivering comprehensive news and information quickly. And we'll continue to pioneer new approaches.

Please keep watching. I think you'll like what you see.
