U.S. soldier dies of wounds in Afghan ambushCNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. Special Forces soldier wounded last month during an attack in Afghanistan has died at a military hospital in Germany, a Pentagon official said Monday.
Sgt. 1st Class Christopher James Speer, 28, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died Wednesday of a head wound suffered July 27 when his reconnaissance patrol was ambushed near Khowst, in eastern Afghanistan. Two Afghan soldiers working with the patrol were killed, and four other U.S. soldiers were wounded. Three of the Americans were later transported to Landstul Army Medical Center in Germany. Speer was assigned to the Headquarters U.S. Army Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The announcement of his death was delayed at the family's request, according to Pentagon officials. |
