Worker dies in 25-story elevator plunge
NEW YORK (CNN) -- A construction elevator plunged more than 25 stories Friday after a cable snapped, killing one worker and critically injuring another, authorities said. The construction worker who died was thrown from the elevator when it crashed to the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The accident happened shortly after 4 p.m. at a construction site in midtown Manhattan, about two blocks east of Times Square. At least four others were injured. Among those was a 40-year-old construction worker who was in the elevator and was freed by rescuers. He was transferred to Bellevue Hospital, where he was reported in critical condition Friday evening. Police said a cable snapped, causing the elevator to plunge. An investigation into the accident is under way. |
