Signature of diversity

(CNN) -- The signature of the CNN Headline News Graphics Department is our diversity. It is also our strength. We are 18 individuals who represent a variety of cultural as well as artistic backgrounds. We are a unique group of people who bring to the table our own blend of expertise, education as well as artistic vision. We span nearly two decades in experience from youngest to most senior and are all at different places in our lives both personally as well as professionally. Some of us have lived in Atlanta our entire lives; some of us have lived here just a few months. Some of us are married; some are not. Some of us believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, some of us believe it was a conspiracy. You get the point. We are a team of artists who have studied and practiced a variety of fine arts disciplines. We are made up of graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, animators, sculptors -- as well as the occasional finger painter. Some of our members have been with CNN Headline News graphics for as long as 15 years. Others have been on board for only six months. While a few members have designed for television our entire professional careers, certain members did not even own a television before joining the department. It is that diversity upon which we rely on so greatly, pulling from each person's unique strengths and contributions while developing each project. We view projects as collaborations among several artists. A single project may involve an artist who is a strong animator, another who is an expert in color theory, another whose strength is type design, and yet another artist who is a three-dimensional designer. This same project may deal with subject matter that a particular member of our department is familiar with and wishes to contribute to, whether it is an animated beginning for a segment on culture, or a map locating a particular region of the world. Virtually every artist has something to contribute to each project. The strength of our department comes from the differences of its individuals, truly giving us a signature of diversity.
