Flight diverted after passenger disturbanceFORT SMITH, Arkansas (CNN) -- A Northwest Airlines flight was diverted Wednesday to an airport here after the pilot reported a disturbance involving passengers, federal officials said. Flight 979, an Airbus A320, was traveling from Memphis, Tennessee, to Las Vegas, Nevada, with 94 passengers and five crew members, when four men got into a confrontation with the flight crew, authorities told CNN. A law enforcement source told CNN that one locked himself in a bathroom and the others came to his assistance when additional passengers became agitated because he would not come out. When crew members and passengers began taking action to resolve the situation, the pilot decided to divert the plane, federal officials said Brian Marshall, an FBI spokesman, said the pilot became concerned with the men's activities, which included using bathroom, but would not give any more details. No one was injured in the incident, authorities said. FBI and local police surrounded the plane on the tarmac after it landed. The four men were taken off the plane and were being questioned by the FBI several hours later, Marshall said. The U.S. attorney's office has been consulted on the case and will decide whether any charges will be filed, he said. A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said the pilot of the plane reported a disturbance shortly after takeoff and the plane landed safely. There was no military escort, officials said. The plane had departed Memphis at 8:45 a.m. (9:45 a.m. ET) and was headed for McCarren International Airport in Las Vegas. |
