U.S. releases name of American who died in theater siege
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. officials have released the name of an American who died in the Moscow hostage standoff.
Sandy Alan Booker, 49, was among those who died, apparently after Russian rescuers pumped in a mystery gas to disable the 50 or so Chechen militants holding about 800 hostages. Moscow's chief doctor said 115 hostages died from health problems stemming from the gas. All of the militants were killed. Another person -- with a U.S. Permanent Resident (Green) Card -- was also among the dead, officials said. A second U.S. citizen -- a woman -- remained in the hospital recovering from the aftermath of the siege, according to U.S. officials. Another American Green Card holder has been released from a Moscow hospital after being treated for exposure to the gas. Russian officials are still refusing to name the gas although the Pentagon, quoting the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, said it was an opiate -- a chemical related to morphine. Hostage-takers demanding an end to the war in Chechnya held their captives in a Moscow theater for 58 hours, killing two before Russian forces stormed the building early Saturday.
