WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon says 55 American service members have died in the global war on terrorism since it began in October 2001. Most of the deaths have been the result of aviation mishaps and other accidents.
Of that number, 45 died in or around Afghanistan and 10 died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Philippines.
Twenty-one of those deaths were categorized as "hostile deaths," including three killed by friendly fire. Nineteen were categorized as killed in action. Two died as a result of wounds received in action.
The other 34 deaths were categorized as "non-hostile," including 21 people killed in aviation mishaps. The rest died in various accidents and other causes.
The Pentagon figures do not include the death of CIA operative Johnny Spann, killed in November 2001 during a prison uprising at Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan.
More than 200 service members have been injured or wounded during Operation Enduring Freedom, the Pentagon said.
