COLUMBUS, Ohio (CNN) -- Ohio State University said Monday it suspended 10 students arrested over the weekend in riots that broke out after the school's football team defeated arch-rival Michigan.

Bill Hall, vice president of student affairs, said the university reviewed arrest records of about 40 people and determined that 10 were students. He said they were suspended immediately and that the school would decide later if anyone would be expelled.

The charges range from underage drinking to public indecency to resisting arrest. Hall said the school and police continued to look at video of the rioting to try to determine the identities of others involved.

Hall and other school officials urged the public to help to identify those suspected of committing crimes. He said the school was putting photos of suspects on the school's Web site.

Vandals early Sunday set fire to couches and cars, overturned vehicles and tried to loot a bookstore, largely in a three-block area off-campus near High Street, the main thoroughfare through campus.

The looting began around 1 a.m. Sunday, hours after Ohio State defeated Michigan, 14-9. The win earned the Buckeyes, who have a record of 13-0, a trip to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona, where they will play for the national title January 3.

"Several students have called and said, 'I have a video, do you want it?'" Hall said, noting the videos would be turned over to school police. Hall said several alumni also called to say they could identify some of the people tipping over cars.

"We witnessed the very worst in reaction to what had been a joyful occasion," said University President Karen Holbrook. "The behavior was criminal and unacceptable. And unfortunately, most of those responsible appeared to be students."

Hall said a big contributing factor to the violence was abuse of alcohol.

"We have a problem in our society when we've got this number of individuals that continue to consume large amounts of alcohol and then lose control of their common senses and good judgment and act out in these ways," Hall said.
