Hershey Trust decides not to sell candy maker
HERSHEY, Pennsylvania (CNN) -- The trust company that controls Hershey Foods Corp. voted not to sell the candy manufacturer, the company announced late Tuesday. The vote comes less than two months after Hershey Trust Company announced it intended to sell its controlling stock in the nation's largest candy maker, raising concerns from lawmakers that the sale might violate anti-trust statutes. A Pennsylvania judge imposed an injunction earlier this month against Hershey Foods from selling itself, a victory for the state attorney general trying to block the sale. House Judiciary Chairman James Sensenbrenner had asked the Federal Trade Commission to review carefully the potential sale of the company. Hershey Trust Co. controls 31 percent of Hershey Foods stock and 77 percent of the Hershey Foods voting stock. Hershey Foods, based in Hershey, Pennsylvania, produces a variety of chocolate and candies from Hershey's chocolate bars and Hershey's Kisses to Kit Kat, Almond Joy, and Milk Duds. |
