Teen shot at Jersey City high school
JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (CNN) -- A teenager was shot in the abdomen at a Jersey City high school just after the start of classes Tuesday, and police have another student in custody, school and police officials told CNN. The incident occurred just inside the doors of Lincoln High School. The wounded student was listed in serious condition at Jersey City Medical Center, but his wounds are not considered life threatening, authorities said. "Lincoln High School is an inner-city high school, and there have been incidents before, but not gunplay within the schools," said Brian K. Dorf, a spokesman for Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham. A student at the high school is the suspect in the shooting and was being questioned Tuesday morning. Police say they believe he acted alone. There are metal detectors at the school, but it was not known if the suspect had been screened. The shooting occurred just inside the door. The school is also patrolled by guards and has a police presence. Cunningham, a strong advocate of gun control with a background in public safety, was scheduled to speak at a 10:30 a.m. news conference today to discuss measures to prevent further violence in the schools.
