NYFD to test more powerful radios
NEW YORK (CNN) -- The New York City Fire Department plans to test a new radio that could help solve communication problems linked to the deaths of firefighters in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, fire officials said Tuesday. A prototype 28-watt radio, designed by a fire officer for use in high-rise buildings, is much larger and more powerful than the 5-watt radios the city's firefighters now use. "It shows great promise. We are looking at this and other means of improving and enhancing our ability to communicate in high rise structures," said Deputy Fire Commissioner Frank Gribbon. The radios were built by a captain in the city department's research and development unit and could be used in a truck, vehicle or mobile command post, Gribbon said. Commanders could conceivably employ one radio in the lobby and another in a car, enhancing radio signals to upper floors. Federal regulations would require people to stand at least two feet away from the antenna. A spokesman for Motorola Inc., which supplies radios to the department, offered a brief comment. "We continue to support our FDNY customer," spokesman Pat Sturmon, said. "We are looking at various technology alternatives, including a solution similar in concept to this."
