Trade Center death toll lowered
From Phil Hirschkorn
NEW YORK (CNN) -- The total number of people who died in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan now stands at 2,792. City officials Friday lowered the total by three, removing the names of three people discovered to be alive, said New York Police Department spokesman Kevin Czartoryski. The NYPD's missing person's unit continues to investigate several dozen cases of other people reported as missing or dead, but for whom remains have not been recovered or identified. Czartoryski predicted the official number of victims would drop further. The three names removed from the list are Oliva Khemrat, Jeffrey Montgomery, and William Yemele. The three are among nine people -- now known to be alive -- whose names were read aloud at a ceremony three months ago marking the anniversary of the destruction of the World Trade Center buildings, caused when two hijacked planes were deliberately flown into the 110-story twin towers. Memorial panels on a viewing fence at Ground Zero listed 2,801 names when they were posted September 10. Corrected panels will be posted in January. Officials have determined that five others "victims" are among the living: Maria Bengochea, Germaan Castillo Garcia, Nikola Lampley, Peter Montoulieu, and Tina Spicer. One removed name, Priscilla James, is a duplicate of victim Gricelda James. Of the 2,792 victims, the city's medical examiner has now positively identified 1,442 through remains, said spokeswoman Ellen Borakove. At the Pentagon, target of a third hijacked plane, 184 people died -- 125 in the building, 59 passengers and crew. A fourth plane hijacked on the same day, crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing 40 passengers and crew.
