Police search for 4-year-old in N.C.Store locked down during search
WHITEVILLE, North Carolina (CNN) -- Police were looking Tuesday for a 4-year-old girl who disappeared while she and her mother were shopping in a Kmart store. Kynande Bennett disappeared around 5 p.m. EDT Sunday, said Whiteville Police Lt. Glenda George.
The child and her mother, Vartasha McCollough, had gone down a couple of aisles when McCollough decided to get a shopping cart and noticed that her daughter was no longer next to her, said George. She retraced her steps, McCollough told authorities, then stood in place, hoping the child would be return to her. After a couple of minutes, said George, McCollough alerted Kmart security. The store went into "code Adam," or lockdown, with no one allowed in or out. The store notified Whiteville police after a 20-minute search. Police have no suspects or leads at the moment, George said. When last seen, Kynande was wearing a gray FUBU shirt, blue jeans and black shoes. Her hair was in braids with small barrettes. She is 3-foot-10, weighs about 90 pounds and is a light-skinned African-American. Kynande and her parents live in Conway, South Carolina, and were in Whiteville visiting a relative. Whiteville is about 46 miles west of Wilmington in eastern North Carolina.
