BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (CNN) -- Two students were found shot at West End High School Wednesday, but it was not clear whether the shooting happened at the school or elsewhere, police said.

The injuries suffered by the students -- both boys, ages 16 and 18 -- were not life-threatening, hospital officials said.

No suspect was in custody Wednesday afternoon, said Birmingham Police Lt. Henry Irby.

"The circumstances surrounding the case itself are very sketchy," he said. "We don't know if they were shot at the high school -- we don't know at what location the students were shot."

One of the teens was being treated at Children's Hospital for a gunshot wound to his right arm, hospital officials said.

The other was being treated at Cooper Green Hospital for a gunshot wound and was "doing fine," an official there said.

Irby said the school remained open after the students were found.
