ROCKVILLE, Maryland (CNN) -- A person died after apparently falling or jumping from a high-rise apartment building in Kensington, police said Saturday.

Police were first alerted that shots had been fired, raising fears that a sniper suspected in the shootings of seven people in the Washington area since Wednesday had struck again, but that did not appear to be the case.

"Preliminarily, there's no indication at all that this individual has been shot," said Montgomery County Public Information Officer Nancy Demme.

She said the impact could have sounded like a gunshot. "There is no indication at all that this is connected to what we are investigating."

The wounds to the victim were consistent with impact, Demme said, "and that the individual did indeed either jump or fall from one of the floors of the building."

A tenant, Seraphina Elliott, told CNN she was returning to the 12-story building at 333 University Blvd. around 3:30 p.m. when she saw the body of a woman on the ground. "One leg was busted open," she said.

The woman appeared to be about 30 years old, Elliott said.

She said she was not convinced that the death was unrelated to the sniper killings. "If she was sitting on a balcony and a sniper got her, this is scary for all of us," she said.
