Vanderbilt footballers get pre-game jolt in bus crash
NASHVILLE, Tennesee (CNN) -- Some Vanderbilt University football players got a jolt Saturday before they even took the field for their game with University of Georgia when a tractor-trailer collided with their bus en route to Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, Vanderbilt officials said. Minor injuries were reported among the 27 people aboard the bus, including defensive linemen and linebackers, assistant coaches and media relations staff, said Suzanne Loftis, a spokeswoman for Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Georgia State Patrol dispatcher Donna Garrett said the accident occurred about 9:30 a.m., on Highway 129, about three miles south of Interstate 85. The truck, which was northbound, apparently swerved to avoid a car that stopped in front of it, and hit two of three southbound buses heading to the game, patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said. He said the third bus was damaged the most, and four players aboard who got cuts and bruises were treated at the scene either by the team's trainers or doctors. Those aboard were transferred to another bus and continued their trip. The other bus sustained minor damage.
