WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The 13-year-old Maryland boy who was shot and critically wounded in the sniper attacks has been released from a children's hospital in Washington.

Children's National Medical Center spokeswoman Ashley Wolf said the boy -- who has not been identified -- was released Monday night. She would not say if he was going home or to another medical facility.

The boy was shot the morning of October 7 as he walked into Benjamin Tasker Middle School in Bowie, Maryland. (Sniper suspect's statements considered)

His aunt, a nurse who had just dropped the boy off in front of the school, saw him collapse and rushed him to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Her quick actions are credited in part for saving the boy's life.

The principal of the middle school, John Lloyd, was surprised and delighted when told of the boy's release. "I can't even begin to convey my feelings. It's the first I've heard of it," he said, adding, "I'm beaming from ear-to-ear!"

Lloyd said the boy had been given a packet of homework -- delivered to the hospital -- about two weeks ago.

"He asked for it," he said. "We're going to take it on a week-to-week basis. We're trying to make sure that he stays up on his work -- within reason," Lloyd said. He said he's not sure when the boy will return to school.

The boy spent more than a month at Children's Hospital recovering from his wounds.
