LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A hit-and-run driver Wednesday night killed a mother and her three children while they were crossing a street, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The incident occurred just after 7 p.m. (10 p.m. EDT) in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County six miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
Witnesses said they saw a man in a white van hit the family before plowing the vehicle into a tree and fleeing on foot.
Authorities said witnesses followed the suspect until police arrived and took him into custody.
The identities of the victims -- 2- and 3-year-old boys, a 6-year-old girl and their 31-year old mother -- have not yet been released.
Police are investigating whether the man was intoxicated or speeding at the time of the accident.
