Two dead in California bus attack
FRESNO, California (CNN) -- A passenger -- in an apparently unprovoked attack -- cut the throat of a bus driver with a pair of scissors, sending the bus hurtling into a cotton field and killing two passengers, sheriff's deputies said Tuesday. A suspect was taken in to custody shortly after the attack Monday night. Twenty-one passengers were treated at the scene, and 25 were taken to hospitals. The driver survived and was in stable condition, according to Lt. Margaret Mims of the Fresno County Sheriff's Department. She said the bus was traveling at freeway speeds at around 9 p.m. Monday in Fresno County, between San Francisco and Los Angeles, when the passenger walked from the back of the bus to the driver and slashed the driver's throat. The driver lost control of the bus, which landed in a nearby cotton field. Mims said the suspect was on the scene, hiding in the cotton, when the California Highway Patrol and sheriff's deputies arrived. He stood up, was pointed out by other passengers, tried to run, but was caught by law officers. Mims said the suspect apparently did not want to take over the bus but just intended to attack the driver. Those on the bus reported that he didn't say anything. "He didn't appear to be overly anxious or angry," she said. Authorities were still looking for the weapon said to be used in the attack. Ester Molina with the Highway Patrol said about 10 people sustained "major injuries." She said several people had to be evacuated via helicopter ambulance. The bus was northbound on Interstate 5. The incident occurred about 50 miles southwest of Fresno, about 10 miles northeast of Coalinga, in the San Joaquin Valley. (Map)
