JACKSON, Mississippi (CNN) -- Emergency response teams Saturday checked on the damage in a small Mississippi town south of Jackson where an early morning storm may have sent a tornado spinning through a subdivision.

"We have some damage in the Byram area of Hinds County," National Weather Service spokesman Dough Butts said. "We expect to have reports from the storm survey crews this afternoon."

County emergency officials were on the scene as well. Downed trees and power lines initially hampered their efforts to reach the site.

Larry Fisher of the Hinds County Emergency Operations Center said some homes were reported damaged by falling trees and other homes were flooded. The center had received no reports of injuries, he said.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the area early Saturday. The forecast called for more storms with possible tornadoes throughout the day as a front stalled over the region.

The morning storm followed one Friday evening about 75 miles to the southeast in Laurel where high winds, possibly a tornado, caused "extremely significant damage" to a high school and a middle school. No injuries were reported.

Don MacKinnon, director of the Jones County Emergency Operations Center in Laurel, said severe winds swept across a small area about four miles northwest of the city about 7 p.m. (8 p.m. ET) Friday.

"We had one mobile home destroyed, one house destroyed and several houses with significant damage," MacKinnon said. "And the West Jones High School gymnasium and the West Jones Middle School both had extremely significant damage."
