CHARLESTON, West Virginia (CNN) -- As floodwaters in southern West Virginia and Virginia receded, the toll of death and destruction inched upward Saturday, with five people dead in West Virginia, one dead in Virginia and another 10 people missing.
The body of a 14-month-old girl was found pinned to a bridge in Superior, West Virginia, Saturday. Her 28-year-old mother's body had been found Friday floating in flood waters nearby, state officials said.
Saturday afternoon, a tree fell on a sport utility vehicle traveling on U.S. 52 near Keystone, killing a woman occupant and critically injuring a man, said Randy Coleman, a spokesman for the West Virginia Office of Emergency Services.
The body of a Panther man was found floating in a river Thursday, and another man died of a heart attack Friday in Garland when emergency officials were unable to reach him.
Another six people are missing in West Virginia, Coleman said.
The deaths brought the total to five in McDowell County since more than 4 inches of rain deluged the region over six hours Thursday. "It's kind of been a tough day in McDowell County," said Coleman.
In Virginia, thunderstorms caused major flooding in Buchanan and Tazewell counties.

A Buchanan County emergency management public information officer said flooding killed one man whose body was found a half mile from his house in Hurley. Four other people remained unaccounted for Saturday.
In West Virginia, up to 700 members of the National Guard have been called to duty, many of whom were put to work directing traffic away from inundated areas. "Lots of roads are not passable," Coleman said.
States of emergency have been declared in Mercer, Wyoming and Mingo counties, all of which are contiguous to McDowell, the hardest-hit county. Gov. Bob Wise has applied for federal disaster funds in the four counties.
Mingo was spared much damage because several of its towns on the Tug Fork River have flood walls. The worst may be over since the river crested late Friday and early Saturday. As the waters recede, what was once underwater is now coated with a thick layer of muck.
Federal Emergency Management Agency officials have arrived on the scene, but no damage estimates have been prepared. "The mode everyone is in continues to be search-and-rescue," Coleman said.
Twelve shelters are open in Mercer, McDowell and Mingo counties.
Fourteen water systems that serve 7,400 customers are off-line, and a boil-water advisory has been issued to another 12,850 customers.

In McDowell County, 1,500 customers were without power Saturday, but service was expected to be restored by the end of the day.
Verizon reported it had already restored phone service throughout the county, which has about 30,000 residents.
Five fire departments in McDowell County and nine schools have been damaged, some heavily. "A decision will have to be made among state and county education officials about how to proceed with the rest of the school year," Coleman said.
This is the second time in two years that areas of southern West Virginia have flooded. A total of $190 million in federal and state aid was spent helping residents of 24 counties recover from the first floods.
