Tornado kills 2 in north Texas
HAPPY, Texas (CNN) -- Two people were killed and four others injured Sunday evening when a tornado roared through this small north Texas town about 30 miles south of Amarillo, authorities said. The twister hit around 6:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. EDT) and tore roofs off buildings and brought down power lines, said Wayne Beighle of the Texas Department of Public Safety in Amarillo. Killed in the storm were Eduardo Castillo, 37, and his wife Yolanda Castillo, 35. Their son Eduardo Castillo Jr. was among the injured. All of the dead and injured lived in mobile homes, Beighle said, and lived within a "city-block area" of each other. Beighle said residents had about 15 minutes' warning before the tornado hit, adding that the toll could have been much worse. "We really dodged a bullet," he said.
According to eyewitnesses, the tornado was a mile wide as it approached town but lifted into the sky before coming back down as a smaller funnel cloud that hit the city. Beighle said Happy, a community of less than 1,000 residents, isn't even a mile across. The storm destroyed 12 homes -- including 10 mobile homes. Ten homes received moderate to heavy damage, Beighle said, with another 14 reported with minor damage. The roof was also torn off the city's First Baptist Church. By late Sunday, electricity had been restored to the city, Beighle said, and damage assessment was due to resume at "first light" Monday. "We've secured the town," Beighle said. "Nobody's getting in that doesn't belong." |
