ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Remote Mossy Grove, Tennessee, was one of the areas hardest-hit by a line of storms that passed through the Southeastern United States on Sunday and Monday.

Folks feared the worst for the tiny town at first. One official said it had been "wiped off the face of the Earth" as early damage reports came in.

But CNN Correspondent Gary Tuchman visited Mossy Grove Monday and found that the town, though battered, was still there. He spoke by phone to CNN anchor Daryn Kagan.

TUCHMAN: The town certainly has not been wiped off the face of the Earth. As a matter of a fact, many of the townspeople are standing right now in front of a Citgo station in the town that's suffered some damage but still stands, as do many businesses in the town. However -- and this is important -- many houses have been completely destroyed. We're standing next to (one) that has lost most of its roof.

We're also being told that at least four people in this small town, that only has a few hundred people, have been killed in the storms that passed through here. According to police, four people were in a car trying to evacuate when a tornado hit them while they were driving, and (police) tell us that those were the four fatalities.

Throughout the state of Tennessee, we're being told, 16 people have been killed as two storms came through here -- one early Sunday morning, one late (Sunday) night. At least 60 people have been injured, and there are up to 150 people still missing. ... There is no phone service -- thousands of people are still without power -- so they're just trying to get in touch with those people who are still officially missing.

KAGAN: OK Gary, we're still dealing with that spotty cell phone service. We did get most of that report, and we'll check back with you.
