Car bomb blasts Bogota
BOGOTA, Colombia (CNN) -- A car bomb shattered the peace in Bogota early Wednesday morning. The blast, which caused damage but no injuries, came one day after an explosion at a former rebel ammo dump killed at least seven Colombian soldiers just after they had seized the site. Twenty-two other soldiers were still missing after two tons of dynamite exploded Tuesday at a shack in Dorado, 60 miles south of Bogota. The shack had been used by the Marxist FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) movement. Four FARC fighters died in the battle for the depot, the army said. Wednesday's blast took place on the street in front of the headquarters of Caracol TV. Reports from the scene indicated some property damage, such as broken glass, but no injuries. There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the explosion, and it was not immediately clear if Caracol TV, one of Colombia's two major private broadcast networks, was targeted. FARC launched a new offensive against the Colombian government earlier this month, although peace talks are ongoing. The government of President Andres Pastrana also began talks Tuesday in Havana with the leftist National Liberation Army (ELN). Colombia's 38-year civil war takes thousands of lives every year. |
