New detainee arrives at Guantanamo BayCNN GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (CNN) -- A new detainee whose identity has not been revealed has been flown to the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, CNN has learned. The latest detainee at the base "was ambulatory with no significant medical issues," said one source. Officials took him to Camp X-Ray, as the detention facility at the U.S. naval base is known.
Sources denied the new prisoner is Abu Zubaydah, accused chief of al Qaeda's operations and recruitment. Handed over to U.S. authorities after he was arrested in March in Pakistan, Zubaydah is being held at an undisclosed location. There are 300 detainees at Camp X-Ray -- a collection of open-air cells with chain-link fences where U.S. forces have been holding and interrogating Taliban and al Qaeda suspects. One of the recent prisoners to leave the camp was Yasser Esam Hamdi, the second so-called accused American Taliban, who was transferred to the brig at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia early this month. Hamdi was seized last year after a prison uprising near Mazar-e Sharif, Afghanistan, along with another accused American Taliban loyalist, John Walker Lindh. |
