CARACAS, Venezuela (CNN) -- A fire at a Caracas nightclub left 47 people dead and about 20 hospitalized Sunday, witnesses and authorities said.

Fire officials said about 300 people were inside the nightclub, located in a poor neighborhood near downtown Caracas, when the fire broke out about midnight Saturday.

Most of those killed died of smoke inhalation inside the club as patrons rushed to escape the building, authorities said. Many of the injured suffered from burns or smoke inhalation.

Grieving relatives and friends stood outside the charred club in a poor district of Caracas, Reuters reported. About 90 firefighters responded to the blaze, which engulfed the small dancing establishment, Globovision said. It took several hours to extinguished the blaze.

The cause of the fire was unknown. Firefighters said it could have started in a kitchen or by an electrical short-circuit. Some witnesses said a shooting preceded the fire, and investigators said the fire might have been the result of foul play.
