Security forces in Afghanistan say journalists threatenedCNN Producer KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- International security forces warned Wednesday of a credible threat to kidnap a non-Afghan journalist. "Information about threats come and go all the time, but this is the first one assessed as credible enough to pass onto journalists," said Lt. Col. Neal Peckham of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). "We are telling journalists to immediately assess their security arrangements as there is a threat specific to them." Peckham said their intelligence reports about the kidnap plans were specific to journalists in Kabul and the threat was said to be made in retaliation for the ongoing U.S.-led attack in eastern Afghanistan's Paktia province against al Qaeda and Taliban forces, the largest military effort of the Afghan war. Earlier this week, a Canadian journalist was seriously wounded when a hand grenade was tossed in her car while she was covering the fighting near Gardez. ISAF asked journalists to "maintain extra vigilance and consider their movements." Eight journalists have been killed covering the war in Afghanistan since U.S. airstrikes began last October. |
