Four U.S. servicemen die in Afghan blast

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Four U.S. servicemen were killed Monday near Kandahar, Afghanistan, when captured enemy rockets they were trying to destroy accidentally detonated, the Pentagon said. Other servicemen were injured, and a few were missing.

The casualties were being evacuated. The soldiers had seized 107 mm rockets from enemy sites and were stockpiling them in a remote area to destroy them.

The explosion followed a weekend of firefights between soldiers and enemy forces. For the second night in a row Sunday, there was enemy fire directed at Khowst in eastern Afghanistan. There were no injuries, U.S. officials said.

Also over the weekend, Special Forces came under enemy fire at a checkpoint in Afghanistan, but there also were no injuries reported in that incident. The U.S. military refused to say where the attack took place.
