Four U.S. soldiers die in Afghan blastKANDAHAR, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Four U.S. soldiers were killed and one was wounded Monday near Kandahar, Afghanistan, when a cache of enemy rockets they were trying to destroy accidentally detonated, the Pentagon said. The U.S. Department of Defense on Tuesday identified the dead as:
-Staff Sgt. Brian T. Craig, 27, of Texas -Staff Sgt. Justin J. Galewski, 28, of Kansas -Sgt. Jamie O. Maugans, 27, of Kansas -Sgt. First Class Daniel A. Romero, 30, of Colorado The first three soldiers were with the 107th Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit out of San Diego, and Romero was from the 19th Special Forces group based in Pueblo, Colorado. The injured soldier was evacuated to the U.S. base hospital in Kandahar, Army Maj. A.C. Roper said. The soldiers had seized the 107 mm rockets from enemy sites and were storing them in a remote area north of Kandahar until they could destroy them under controlled conditions. U.S., coalition and Afghan government forces secured the site of the blast and were investigating. The explosion followed a weekend of firefights between soldiers and enemy forces. For the second night in a row Sunday, there was enemy fire directed at Khowst in eastern Afghanistan. There were no injuries, U.S. officials said. Also over the weekend, Special Forces came under enemy fire at a checkpoint in Afghanistan, but there were no injuries reported. The U.S. military refused to say where the attack took place. |
