Pro-Taliban fighters returned to PakistanAsh-har Quraishi PESHAWAR, Pakistan (CNN) -- The first of more than 200 former pro-Taliban Pakistani fighters have arrived in Peshawar from Afghanistan as part of a repatriation agreement between the two countries. The prisoners, who arrived from Mazar-e Sharif on two C-130 flights on Saturday, will be questioned by Pakistani authorities at the Peshawar jail and either released or tried for alleged crimes. The rest of the former pro-Taliban fighters, who have languished in Afghan jails for the past six months, will arrive Sunday. Hundreds of Pakistanis who fought alongside Taliban fighters are believed to be in prisons across Afghanistan, after anti-Taliban forces captured them during the U.S.-led military campaign that ousted the Taliban regime. They are expected to slowly return to Pakistan as part of an agreement with Afghanistan's interim government. |
