1 dead in Kabul peacekeepers attack
KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- An Afghan man has been killed and three people including two French aid workers wounded in an explosion that military police said was an attack on international troops. No soldiers from the peacekeeping force were injured in Friday's incident though, in which the attacker also died, a military spokesman said. Authorities said an Afghan man threw a grenade near a compound housing the peacekeeping forces in the capital Kabul, setting off a small explosion. One of the French aid workers sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the military spokesman said. The compound belongs to the Kabul Multinational Brigade, which is guarded by German forces who opened fire on the attacker, according to Afghan police. However, a spokesman for the German peacekeeping contingent said the attacker blew himself up with the grenade. The attacker was reportedly waiting in line to enter the compound when he realized he would not be able to pass through the security checkpoint. He threw at least one grenade about five feet (1.5 meters) from where he stood in line, which caused the casualties. Another grenade detonated on or near the attacker, killing him, military officials said. Officials do not believe the incident was a suicide attack or a well-planned, organized terrorist assault. The explosion occurred two days after two U.S. Special Forces soldiers were seriously wounded in another grenade attack in downtown Kabul. -- From CNN's Karl Penhaul & Producer Lonzo Cook
