Jaime FlorCruz: China bugged by discovery
(CNN) -- Two newspapers have reported that a Boeing 767 delivered to the Chinese government was filled with listening devices. China's president is said to be furious, though the government has neither confirmed nor denied the discovery of any bugs on the jet. CNN Beijing Bureau Chief Jaime FlorCruz had more on the story Saturday. JAIME FLORCRUZ: When the Chinese ordered this special Boeing jetliner, they had envisioned a presidential plane outfitted with a bedroom and bathroom and advanced communication and avionics equipment, sort of like a Chinese version of an Air Force One. But when this jetliner was delivered last fall, the Chinese found over 20 listening devices planted in the plane, according to the reports from the Washington Post and the Financial Times. Of course, the Chinese must have been shocked by it. Although China has yet to issue an official reaction, the analysts and the officials we've talked are invariably incredulous that the U.S. would even attempt to do that [bugging]. However, some analysts are not totally shocked, saying that spying is not uncommon, and that even the U.S. and its allies spy against each other. He also worried, however, that this might, again, fan hostilities and nationalistic fervor among some Chinese. However, you know, some government officials here say that that is unlikely |
