Titanic plan for Shanghai mall
Hong Kong, China -- Though it won't raise the world's most famous shipwreck, plans are underway to build a full-sized replica of the Titanic as part of a shopping mall in Shanghai. Inspired by the 1997 hit-film 'Titanic', Hong Kong's Concord World Group intends to construct a concrete and steel model of the 269-meter ill-fated ship, the South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday. The replica will form the centerpiece of the 60,000 square meter shopping center's New York Zone, one of five city-themed areas in the complex. The Titanic never made it to New York, sinking after hitting an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Britain in 1912. Other planned models in the Shanghai mall included a scaled down Eiffel Tower and Sydney Harbour Bridge. The shopping center is due to be completed within three years at a total cost of around 7 billion yuan ($845 million), the Post reported. |
