Moderate earthquake near TaiwanHUALIEN, Taiwan (CNN) -- An earthquake with moderate intensity was measured Tuesday in the Pacific, 35 miles east of Hualien, Taiwan, and no major damage was reported. The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.7, said Waverly Person from the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado. He said there have been a series of similar earthquakes in the area in the last few weeks. "Usually they [Hualien residents] feel them, and there could be minor damage," Person said. Hualien, which has about 108,000 people, is on the east coast of Taiwan. |
