South Korea indicts president's son
SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) -- South Korean prosecutors have indicted the son of South Korean President Kim Dae-jung on charges of influence peddling. Kim Hong-gul was arrested in recent weeks after he allegedly accepted a bribe to get a lottery company a license. The president's youngest son reportedly received about $2 million from the lottery company and then influenced the government to give the firm a license to sell the tickets. Kim Hong-gul has not commented directly on any of the allegations, although he has apologized to the nation for any controversy he has caused the first family in his dealings with businessmen accused of financial misdeeds. The president's two other sons are also being investigated for possible influence peddling. South Korea's 77-year-old president quit his ruling party in May and apologized for the series of corruption scandals involving his sons and some confidants. Kim's departure from the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) came ahead of local elections in June. South Korean presidents have traditionally stepped aside ahead of elections, though Kim's resignation followed the family controversy and a bout in hospital to recover from fatigue. -- CNN Seoul Bureau Chief Sohn Jie-Ae contributed to this report. |
