Kim Dae-jung's second son faces arrest
SEOUL, South Korea -- Prosecutors are seeking to arrest a second son of President Kim Dae-jung on bribery charges, only a month after arresting his youngest son on charges of influence peddling. Prosecutors asked for an arrest warrant Friday for Kim Hong-up, the second oldest son of the president, who is charged with receiving bribes from businessmen. In a statement, prosecutors said he received $1.8 million in bribes from companies in exchange for using his influence in the government. The Yonhap news agency says Hong-up admitted wrongdoing. A Seoul criminal court was expected to decide Friday on whether to issue the warrant. The investigations of President Kim's sons has caused increasing embarrassment, coninciding with the country's celebrations as the South Korean team advances in the World Cup soccer tournament. The President's youngest son, Kim Hong-gul was arrested a month ago for reportedly receiving some $2 million from a lottery company and then influencing the government to give the firm a license to sell the tickets. He is awaiting trial. While the President has not been implicated in any of the scandals, he apologized to the nation for the series of corruption scandals involving his sons and some confidants. In May he quit his ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) ahead of local elections in which his party was defeated in most of the prominent races. |
