Bomb shakes UK High Commission in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A small crudely made bomb hidden inside a passenger van has exploded in the parking area outside the British High Commission in Islamabad.

No one was injured in the blast, officials say.

Pakistan police said the homemade device was placed inside the van belonging to a British staffer on Thursday.

The bomb went off after the vehicle was parked next to the British High Commission causing a hole in the trunk of the vehicle, Nasir Khan Durrani, senior superintendent of police, told The Associated Press.

Police are trying to determine the cause of explosion, but no arrests have been made so far.

No group or individual has yet claimed responsibility.

Islamabad has tightened security at Western embassies within Pakistan, including the United States and Britain, following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

The subsequent U.S.-led military campaign against the Taliban and al-Qaeda in neighboring Afghanistan has caused angry protests from several pro-Taliban Muslim groups in Pakistan.

The bomb attack comes just two days after gunmen on motorcycles killed four policeman and wounded 20 other people outside a U.S. government building in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata.
