ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani police and U.S. commandos arrested about 35 Islamic militants -- including suspected al Qaeda and Taliban members -- early Thursday, police said.

Authorities conducted the early morning raids in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province, near the Indian border, in at least two Pakistani cities, Lahore and Faisalabad.

The suspects opened fire during one of the raids, seriously wounding a police officer, a police spokesman said. One suspect was killed and two more were wounded, the spokesman added.

About 35 American commandos joined Pakistani police in the operation, police sources said. The U.S. military had not confirmed Thursday whether its personnel took part.

Witnesses said security was extremely tight as the detainees were rounded up and taken away.

Authorities conducted the operation after getting unspecified information that the suspects had been "involved in terrorist activities in the past and were planning further terrorist acts," according to police.

Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, banned five Islamic groups in January as part of a major crackdown on militancy in his country.

There were reports that at least some of the suspects may have some connection with the March 17 attack on the Protestant International Church in Islamabad that left five people -- including two Americans -- dead. Authorities said they were investigating the report.
