Three killed in Kashmir blastSRINAGAR, Kashmir (CNN) -- At least three people were killed and at least 16 others were wounded Tuesday when an explosive device went off in the disputed Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, police sources said. According to police, explosives were packed into a scooter that was detonated as an Indian army convoy passed by on the Srinagar-Jammu highway at the town of Aawntipora. The three people killed in the blast were civilians. Of the 16 injured, four are army members and 12 are civilians. Police said they suspect Kashmiri militants in the attack, but no one has claimed responsibility. More than a dozen Islamic groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence from India since militant insurgency began in 1989. Authorities say that around 30,000 people have been killed during the campaign in the Muslim majority state. |
