Two dead as Nepal bus hits landmine
KATHMANDU, Nepal (CNN) -- An attack on a passenger bus in eastern Nepal's Dolakha district has killed two people and seriously injured more than 20 others, police said. The bus -- fully loaded with passengers -- was en route from Dolakha to Kathmandu when it hit a landmine in the middle of the road before running off the highway and crashing. Police believe the landmine was intentionally placed on the well-traveled road. "The injured passengers in critical condition were rushed to hospitals in Kathmandu in a helicopter," a police official told Reuters news agency. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident that came a day after a three-day general strike called by Maoist rebels, but police said they suspect it to be the work of the insurgents, who are fighting to make Nepal into a communist republic. On Wednesday, police in the Himalayan kingdom thwarted a bombing attempt on the home of one of the king's top advisors. One man was shot and killed and at least three others arrested, Home Ministry sources said. (Bombing thwarted) The men planted the explosive device at the home of Keshar Jung Rayamajhi -- head of the supreme advisory council to the king. Police defused it before any damage was done. The government says that nearly 7,000 people have died in the course of the Maoist insurgency, which began in 1996. -- Journalist Suman Pradhan contributed to this report
