Kashmir bomb kills two

Story Tools

SRINAGAR, Indian-administered Kashmir (CNN) -- A massive explosion in the northern Kashmiri city of Bandipor has killed two people and wounded seven others.

Police said Tuesday an officer in the paramilitary Border Security Force and a civilian died in the midday explosion that also wounded five members of the Jammu and Kashmir state police and two civilians.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast, but police suspect it is the work of Islamic militants fighting Indian rule in the Himalayan region.

A new government took office in Jammu and Kashmir earlier this month promising to work actively to resolve the Kashmir dispute.

India controls two-thirds of the region and Pakistan holds the other third.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed in violence since 1989, when a separatist movement against Indian rule turned violent.
